Abstract

857,443. Electroluminescent devices. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Feb. 25, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 6128/58. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent device comprises a crossed grid structure of two arrays of electrical conductors, 42, 44, 46, &c. and 52, 54, 56, &c. having interposed between them a first electroluminescent structure including a first electroluminescent leyer 48, a second structure comprising an electroluminescent layer 62 disposed between two conducting layers 60, 64 and between the crossed-grid structure and the second electroluminescent structure, a transparent electrically insulating layer 58. The first electroluminescent structure may include a photoconductive layer 50. D.C. switching potentials are applied to the conductors of the crossed grid and an A.C. voltage amplitude modulated with the signal to be reproduced is applied to the conducting layers 60, 64. The whole of the illumination of the second layer 62 therefore varies with the applied signal voltage but this variation is only reproduced and amplified in the second layer at the point energised by the switching potentials. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 746,502.
