Abstract
Oriented graft copolymer structures, e.g. fibres, filaments and films, are made by subjecting a structure made from polyethylene or polypropylene in the form of a thin elongated body having one dimension not exceeding 0,1 inch and at least one dimension greater than 2 inches to the action of ozone in an inert fluid medium containing at least 0,05% by volume of ozone gas per unit volume of inert fluid medium, then reacting the ozonised structure with acrylonitrile at temperatures between 25 DEG and 220 DEG C. whereby a graft copolymer having polymer chains of acrylonitrile attached to the polyolefin is formed, and orienting the resulting graft copolymer structure by stretching it in at least one of its dimensions by an amount of at least 10% of the initial dimension. The fluid medium in which the ozone is contained may be gaseous, e.g. air or oxygen, or liquid, e.g. an organic liquid such as carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride or ethyl alcohol which swells but does not dissolve the polymer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 791,453 and 825,680.
