Abstract
The invention comprises the dipivaloxy esters of dihydroxy-polyphenyls, dihydroxy-diphenylalkanes, and dihydroxy-polyalkylene polyphenols; and a process for the manufacture of the esters by reacting the appropriate dihydroxy compound with two equivalents of trimethylacetyl chloride, preferably in the presence of a HCI-acceptor, such as pyridine. In Example 1, 4,41-dipivaloxy biphenyl is prepared by heating a mixture of p, p1-biphenol, trimethylacetyl chloride, and pyridine on a steam-bath. Example 2 describes the preparation of 2,2-bis (p-pivaloxy phenyl) propane. These esters are stable at high temperatures and have radiation-resistant properties; they are therefore suitable for use as coolants, hydraulic fluids, moderators, shields and lubricants in apparatus exposed to high temperatures and/or ionizing radiation (see Groups III and XL(a)). In general the pure esters are solids; and it may be desirable to lower the meltingpoints by using mixtures of the esters. Such mixtures are obtained by treating two or more different dihydroxy compounds of the type specified with pivalyl chloride. The dipivalic ester of bis (p-hydroxy-b -cumyl) benzene is referred to.ALSO:The diesters formed between pivalic acid (trimethyl acetic acid) and certain dihydroxy aromatic compounds (namely dihydroxy polyphenyls, dihydroxy diphenylalkanes and dihydroxy polyalkylene polyphenyls having no more than one hydroxyl group on each phenyl radical) are used as coolants, hydraulic fluids and lubricants in apparatus exposed to high temperatures. In general the pure esters are solids; and it may be desirable to lower the melting-points by using mixtures of the esters. Example 4 relates to the high-temperature lubricating properties of the ester derived from 4,41-dihydroxy biphenyl.
