Abstract
The invention comprises 17a -ethynyl-and17a -methyl - 17b - hydroxyandrosta - 1:4:6 - trien - 3 - one, pregna-1:4:6-triene-3:20-dione and -3:11:20-trione, 16a -methylpregna - 1 : 4-diene- 3:20-dione, 20:20-ethylenedioxypregna-1 : 4-dien-3-one, cholesta-1 : 4-diene-3 : 6-dione, the acetonide of 16a -17a -dihydroxypregna-1 : 4-diene-3 : 20-dione, 17b -acetoxy - 2 - methylandrosta - 1:4 - dien - 3 - one and pregna - 1:4:9(11) - triene - 3:20 - dione, and a process for the preparation of 3-oxo-\se1:4- and -\se1:4:6-6-demethyl-steroids which comprises treating the corresponding \se4- or \se4:6- compound with 2:3-dicyano-1:4-benzoquinone, which may be additionally substituted with one or two chlorine atoms, in a solvent, advantageously in the presence of a catalytic quantity of p-nitrophenol. The \se1:4:6-compounds obtained can be converted into aromatic steroids by reaction with toluene-p-sulphonic acid in acetic anhydride.
