For the production of a cable pattern on a flat knitting-machine with front and rear needle beds, the stitches are arranged with the stitches to form the cable on the needles 1-6 of the rear bed and a stitch to form a margin on either side of the cable on needles 7V, 8V of the front bed. After a number of courses have been produced thus, the needles 4V, 5V, 6V of the front bed are brought into action and engage and elongate the sinker loops at the sides of the needles 4, 5, 6 (Fig. 1). The loops are then cast off needles 4V, 5V, 6V so that the stitches on needles 4, 5, 6 become elongated. The stitches on the front bed needles 7V, 8V are then transferred to rear bed needles 7,8 and the stitches on needles 1-6 to the needles 1V-6V, this transfer being made possible by a brush which retains the latches of the needles 1V-6V open after the previous carriage stroke. The front bed is then shogged three needles to the right causing a powerful pull of the stitches to the left, and the needles 1V, 2V, 3V advanced into the transfer position, the stitches being prevented from being drawn along the stems of the needles by the advance of the needles 4, 5, 6, actuated by an augmented cam box, which act as holders for the stitches. The needles 4, 5, 6 are inserted into the stitches on the sides of the needles 1V, 2V, 3V opposite to the spreading springs, which are pressed against the needle stems by the tension in the loops (Fig. 3). The front bed is then shogged to the left seven stitches, and then to the right one stitch to relieve the yarn tension, and the stitches on needles 4V, 5V, 6V transferred to needles 1, 2, 3. Finally the cable flanking stitches are transferred from needles 7, 8 to needles 7V, 8V.
