Abstract
Uranium articles are protected by plating or otherwise coating with nickel. Further coatings of Cu, Cr, Al-Si alloy may be applied to the nickel, and then heated to alloy the nickel with the uranium, and also with the overcoat-metal e.g. copper to form a cupro-nickel alloy. Heating may be effected by dipping in a bath of a mixture of alkali metal chlorides in molten state at 700 DEG to 800 DEG C., or by inductive or radiant heating in vacuo or in an inert gas. Coating by hot-dipping in molten zinc, lead and tin are referred to, when a thick nickel under coating should be used; also in a brazing alloy of 88% Al and 12% Si, the coated nickel plated uranium rod being then brazed to an aluminium sheath. The uranium rod may be pre-treated by light sand blasting, and etching with HCl, HNO3, trichlor-acetic acid or molten ferric chloride. Specification 853,521 is referred to.
