Abstract
Metal articles are subjected to two successive treatments for the formation of protective metal layers thereon, the first of such treatments differing from the second and comprising a thermochemical treatment by at least one fluoride of an addition metal to form a diffusion alloy. Ferrous articles may be chromized, using chromium fluoride, for 6 hours at 1100 DEG C. and then sprayed with aluminium or calorized for 10 hours at 900-950 DEG C. in a mixture of 30 per cent aluminium, 65 per cent alumina and 5 per cent ammonium chloride. Alternatively, the second coating may be of silicon, molybdenum or tungsten and the first coating may be of several metals together. In a further alternative, chromizing is followed by electro-plating with chromium. The thermochemical treatment may be carried out as in Specification 693,292.
