Abstract
The invention comprises mono-or dicarbamates of a 2:2-dichloro-1-aryl-1:3-propane diol of the formula : <FORM:0853322/IV(b)/1> wherein one R is carbamyl and the other R is hydrogen or carbamyl, R1 is hydrogen, C1-7 alkyl, C1-7 alkoxy, halogen or trifluoromethyl and n is 1 or 2. The compounds are prepared by reacting a cyclic carbonic ester of the formula : <FORM:0853322/IV(b)/2> or the corresponding 1:3-chlorocarbonate, with ammonia, preferably liquid ammonia in the cold. Cyclic carbonic esters of the formula : <FORM:0853322/IV(b)/3> are prepared by reacting a diol of the formula : <FORM:0853322/IV(b)/4> with an equimolor amount of phosgene. Diols of the above formula are prepared by reacting an ester of a compound of the formula : <FORM:0853322/IV(b)/5> with a chlorinating agent (e.g. sulphuryl chloride) to form the corresponding a :a -dichloroacetic acid ester, and treating the latter compound with a hydrogenating agent (e.g. lithium aluminium hydride).ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition comprises as the active ingredient a mono or dicarbonate of a 2:2-dichloro-1-aryl-1:3-propane diol of the formula: <FORM:0853322/VI/1> wherein one R is carbamyl and the other is hydrogen or carbamyl, R1 is hydrogen, C1-7 alkyl, C1-7 alkoxy, halogen or trifluoromethyl, and n is 1 or 2. The composition may be formulated in tablets, capsules or elixirs.
