Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0861938/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl of at most 6 carbon atoms or phenyl and R1 is alkyl of at most 6 carbon atoms) and the preparation thereof by reducing a diethyl alpha-R-alpha-(2-R1-allyl)-malonate to the corresponding diol, ring closing this by treatment with a mineral acid, reacting the 2 - methyl - 2 - R1 - 4 - R - 4 - hydroxymethyl-tetrahydrofuran so formed with phosgene and finally treating the chlorocarbonate obtained with anhydrous ammonia or ammonium hydroxide. Examples are given, in which 2 - allyl - 2 - methallyl -, 2 - propyl - 2 - methallyl- and 2-phenyl-2-methallyl-1:3-propanediol dicarbamates are isolated as by-products in the last stage of the process. In the Provisional Specification the carbamates are alternatively formulated as 3-R1-5-R-5-carbamoyloxymethyl-tetrahydropyrans.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions contain, as essential active ingredients, compounds of the formula <FORM:0861938/VI/1> (wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl of at most 6 carbon atoms or phenyl and R1 is alkyl of at most 6 carbon atoms). They may take the form of tablets, pills or capsules, or solutions for oral or parenteral administration.
