Abstract

Meta-sulphoisophthalic acid is prepared by mixing solid isophthalic acid and liquid sulphur trioxide and heating the mixture under substantially atmospheric pressure to a temperature above 160 DEG C., preferably 200 DEG -260 DEG C., until the isophthalic acid is substantially completely sulphonated. Equimolar amounts of the reactants may be used but preferably a slight excess of sulphur trioxide is used. The product of the process is substantially pure M-sulphoisophthalic acid. Batch and continuous versions of the process are specified in Examples.
