Abstract
853,027. Electric correspondence control systems. WEIR Ltd., G. & J. Feb. 17, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1956], No. 35021/56. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] Overheating of a centrifugal pump is avoided by controlling the electrical or steam power supply to the pump driving means by a relay controlled by the difference in temperature between the fluids entering and leaving the pump, as sensed by thermistors connected into a bridge circuit. As shown, a steam turbine 4 drives a centrifugal pump 6 via gearing 5, and an oil pump 7 feeding a cylinder 14 containing a spring-loaded piston 15 connected by a bellcrank 16, 17, 18 to a spring-loaded stop valve 20 controlling the steam supply to the turbine 4, the oil pressure pipe 12 also being connected to a discharge pipe 21 via a governor-controlled valve 23 responsive to the speed of the pump 6, or via a solenoid-operated valve 22 controlled by a bridge circuit 3 including thermistors 1, 2 in the suction and discharge systems of the pump. If the temperature difference sensed by the thermistors exceed a predetermined value, relay 22 is operated, the oil pressure in pipe 12 falls, piston 15 is released to engage lever 16, which via levers 17, 18 operates valve 20 to cut-off the steam supply to the turbine 4. Similar action occurs when relay 23 is operated at a predetermined speed of the pump 6. Specification 814,401 is referred to.
