Abstract
852,862. Centrifugal governors. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. June 4, 1959, No. 19117/59. Class 57. In a centrifugal governor for controlling the fuel supply to an engine and comprising flyweights 13 opposed by a spring 18, the loading on the spring is controlled by means including an hydraulic piston and cylinder, the position of the cylinder being manually adjustable. Movement of the flyweights actuates the engine fuel pump rack 17. One end of the spring 18 abuts a piston 20 slidable in a cylinder 27, itself slidable on a post 28, and supplied with oil under pressure from the lubricating oil system through a passage 30 in the post, a pipe 31 and a passage 32. The position of the piston 20 and thus the governor loading is normally set by a control lever 21 connected to a lever 23 on a rotatable shaft carrying a yoke 24 with pins 25 engaging a groove 26 in the cylinder 27. The governor loading may be reduced to temporarily decelerate the engine, without altering the control lever 21, by operating a foot pedal 39 to open a normally shut valve 35 and drain oil from the cylinder to the engine sump through a pipe 34 and a passage 33 in the post 28. The consequent upward movement of the piston 20 is limited by a spring 43. Release of the pedal 39 restores the piston 20 to its set position. The deceleration range is adjusted by adjusting the vertical position of the post 28; a nut 48 provided for the purpose being normally locked by a cap 46.
