Abstract

852,585. Transparent pressure sensitive adhesive tape. BERGSTEDT, M. A. May 22, 1957 [May 31, 1956], No. 16312/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A normally tacky and pressure sensitive adhesive tape for use as a splicing tape for cinematograph film comprises a flexible backing possessing good optical transmission, dimensional stability, high softening point, high tensile and tear strength, provided with perforations coincident with those on a film strip of matching width, a primer coat of good optical transmission on one side of said backing, and an adhesive coat of good optical transmission on said primer coat, said adhesive coat containing a polyvinyl ether as an elastomeric base. The backing may be a polyethylene terephthalate or cellulose triacetate film. The polyvinyl ether may be a vinyl alkyl ether polymer having an intrinsic viscosity from 3 to 15 and wherein the alkyl group has between 2 and 4 carbon atoms. The primer coat may comprise a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer mixed with a butadiene-styrene copolymer or a polyisocyanate-rubber elastomer. The side of the backing opposite the adhesively coated side may be provided with a backsize coat which may contain stearate chromic chloride, an octadecyl acrylate-acrylic acid copolymer or polyvinyl carbamate. The adhesive tape may be perforated to register with the perforations in film to be spliced. Examples of plasticizers, tackifiers, and stabilizers are given.
