Abstract
852,101. Gas-generating cartridges for engine starters. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 4, 1959 (Feb. 4, 1958], No. 3958/59. Class 9(1). [Also in Group XII] A cartridge for engine starters comprises an axially bored pellet 2 coated on its outer and inner surfaces 21, 22 with a substance inhibiting burning, the pellet being housed in a cylindrical resilient casing 1 having a domed base 16 with upstanding ribs 14 on which the pellet rests. A well between the ribs houses an electric igniter 3 and the mouth of the casing 1 is closed by a membrane 4 over which is a metal grating 5. The cartridge is placed in a metal breech chamber 100 consisting of a receiver 101, from which an exhaust 112 leads, and a lid 102 connected by bayonet lugs 103 to the receiver. Through the centre of the lid passes an electrode 106 surrounded by an insulating sleeve 107, the return circuit being made through a spring contact 31. The igniter 3, Fig. 3, consists of a polyethylene cup 35 with a snap-on lid 34 surrounding a boss 50 and houses a charge 39 in which is embedded an electric squib 40. Lead wires connect the squib to terminals 37, 38, the terminal 37 being connected through a hollow sleeve 51 to a spring- stressed plunger 52, these connections being insulated by a sleeve 36 from the connection 33 between terminal 38 and contact 31.
