Class 123(3) In a water-tube boiler having an upright furnace chamber 10 lined with generating tubes and fired by burners 41, combustion gases flowing through a lateral pass 11 locating a reheater 79 and a secondary superheater 66 into a downpass where they divide for flow through a main pass 12 or a by-pass 52 in which are respectively disposed a second section of primary superheater 65 with an economizer section 84 and an economizer section 85 in a manner determined by the settings of steamtemperature controlling, proportioning dampers 57, 58, the first section 64 of primary superheater is located in the upper part of the furnace chamber 10 and consists of a number of pendent platens 67 relatively widely spaced across the width of the furnace. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, each platen has an inlet header 68 and an outlet header 68A aligned therewith, an intermediate mixed header 69 being disposed adjacent and co-extensive with the headers 68, 68A. Connecting these headers with the header 69 are two rows of depending, return-bend tubes 70 each tube having a pair of closely adjacent limbs connected by a small radius return bend 70C. With this construction the amount of tube surface laterally exposed to direct impingement of the gases rising in the furnace is reduced to a minimum so that the tendency to slag build-up and tube overheating is lessened.
