Abstract

A solution for the chemical polishing of copper and its alloys comprises, by volume 5-40% arsenic acid of a concentration of 80% by weight in water, 2-50% nitric acid of specific gravity 1.5, and 10-75% phosphoric acid of specific gravity 1.75. Additional water up to 20% by volume and/or glacial acetic acid may also be present. A preferred solution contains 10-30% arsenic acid, 10-15% nitric acid, 20-30% phosphoric acid, 30-50% acetic acid, and 0-10% additional water. The polishing of copper, nickel-silver, 70/30 brass, and gilding metal (Cu 80-90%, Zn 20-10%) is exemplified. Specification 738,744 and U.S.A. Specification 2,446,060 are referred to.
