Abstract

851,160. Locks of curled filaments: wadding. VERSIL Ltd. Dec. 18, 1958 [May 14, 1958], No. 15465/58. Classes 120(1), 120(3) and 142(4). [Also in Groups VIII and XIII] A web for thermal insulation is made by attenuating and grouping a number of continuously-extruded filaments to form a strand, drawing the strand over or through means to stress the individual filaments to varying extents to curl them and fuzz the strand, separating the fuzzy strand into short lengths and delivering them on to a conveyer to build up a web of high porosity. In Fig. 1, glass filaments 1 extruded from a furnace are collected by a hopper 3 and led into a V-groove in the periphery of a drum 5. The strand so formed is withdrawn by an air-traction device 6 into a tube 8 from which it is withdrawn by a further tractiondevice 9 over a device, e.g. a knife-edge 10 arranged to cause the strand to change direction sharply so that the filaments are curled to fuzz the strand, into a pipe 11. The pipe being constricted at 9, portions of the fuzzed strand are severed at intervals and expelled through an outlet 12a which may oscillate laterally to spread the ejected material over a conveyer belt of openmesh material on which it is compressed by an upper belt 16. The material is sprayed with binder at 18 and dried with hot air supplied through distributer heads 19. The speed and spacing of the belts may be regulated to vary respectively the density and thickness of the web, and one belt may serve a number of strandfuzzing and separating units.
