Abstract
850,420. Treating gases with liquids. BELGE DE L'AZOTE ET DES PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DU MARLY. May 21, 1958 [June 7, 1957], No. 16325/58. Drawing to Specification. Class 55 (2). Water is injected under pressure into a pyrolysis chamber containing hot gases, originating from the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, in the form or thin substantially fan-shaped sheets through slits which are inclined at an angle of between 2 and 5 degrees to the horizontal so as to be parallel to one another and which are inclined at an angle of between 10 and 15 degrees to the direction of flow of the gases, whereby the sheets initially overlap but subsequently merge to form a stable homogeneous layer of water the area covered by the overlapping sheets being at least equal to the cross sectional area of the pyrolysis chamber. Apparatus used to inject water into hot pyrolysis gases may comprise a pyrolysis chamber of a vertical pyrolysis furnace having at its lower end a portion of increased cross section around which are distributed a plurality of sprayers each of which has a slit inclined at an angle of 2 to 5 degrees to the horizontal, there being means for ejecting water under pressure through the slits, the arrangement being such that when the apparatus is in operation, water is injected into the gases emanating from the pyiolysis chamber in the form of thin substantially fan-shaped sheets which overlap to cover an area which is at least equal to the cross sectional area of the pyrolysis chamber, the slits being inclined at an angle of between 10 and 15 degrees to the flow of the gases. Preferably a curtain of water is formed around the inner walls of the pyrolysis chamber, the water of the curtain flowing downwardly and stretching over the water layer, whereby the formation of a mist of droplets due to the merging of the sheets of water is prevented. Preferably also each sheet of water has an apex angle of 60 degrees. The pyrolysis chamber may be vertical in cross section, the sheets originating from sprayers distributed around a frusto-conical ring at the bottom of the chamber, the sprayers lying on a circle the diameter of which is greater than that of the chamber and is such that the sheets overlap at points disposed around a circle the diameter of which is at least equal to that of the pyrolysis chamber, whereby the area covered by the overlapping sheets is at least equal to the cross sectional area of the pyrolysis chamber. By the above process, during the partial combustion of methane a pyrolysis gas having an 8.4% by weight acetylene contact was obtained.
