Abstract
1291487 Carbon black PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 29 Dec 1969 [30 Dec 1968] 63050/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A low structure, large particle furnace black characterized by a random crystallite orientation, having a photolometer value of at least 80%, a nitrogen surface area of 5-20 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and a dibutyl phthallate absorption of 35-110 c.c./100 gm. (claimed per se) is produced by feeding hydrocarbon feedstock downwardly into a vertical pyrolysis zone, contacting this feedstock with a mass of hot free-oxygen containing gas at a temperature sufficient to maintain the feedstock at a temperature of 2400-2500‹ F., transporting this mass of feedstock and gas through the pyrolysis zone at an overall velocity of less than 15 feet./sec. The feedstock may be sprayed in as a mass of discrete particles, e.g. under the influence of an atomizing gas such as air or steam. Suitable free-oxygen containing gases include combustion gases produced by burning a hydrocarbon fuel in air, the fuel may be introduced to the furnace as a separate stream, or may be incorporated in the hydrocarbon feedstock. An after treatment of the black may be carried out by introducing secondary air into the furnace at a point, or series of points, partway along the furnace, prior to the exit. Additives, e.g. KNO 3 , may be incorporated in the feed.
