Abstract
849,229. Variable-speed gear. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 26,1957 [Aug. 15, 1956],No. 23791/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in GroupXXIX] A three-element hydrodynamic torque converter 10, the turbine T of which drives an output shaft 118 through a planetary gear 12 for forward reduced drive, whilst its reactor R drives the planet gear backwards for reverse, has a direct drive friction clutch the driven disc 88 of which is directly connected to the output 118 and is clamped against an input housing 80, for clutch engagement, by static pressure in the working circuit of the converter acting on the converter impeller P, which is formed as a pressure-plate and is slidably connected to the input housing by pins 76. The pressure in the working circuit is opposed by a control pressure in the housing, clutch engagement being effected by decreasing the pressure supplied to the housing by a control circuit fed by speed-responsive input and output driven pumps 34, 150. For forward reduced ratio (1.59 in the gear) a brake 154 holds a stepped-planet carrier 114, and through a oneway clutch 110 the converter reactor R. The turbine T of the torque converter directly drives a sun 68, drive issuing at a sun 120 integral with the output shaft 118. For reverse a brake 160 holds the sun 68 and connected turbine T, the reactor R rotates backwards, and through the one-way clutch 110 drives reversely the planet carrier 114 which, reacting on the braked sun 68, drives the output sun 120 in reverse (2.50 in the gear).
