Abstract

A filter element for a cigarette or cigarette holder, comprises bulked filaments which, whilst their surfaces are rendered adhesive by a solvent plasticizer, are formed into a rod and enclosed in a paper tube coated internally with a material which is also rendered adhesive by the plasticizer and to which, as well as to each other, the filament ultimately bond. The filaments are of a thermoplastic material, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate/chloride polymer or crimped secondary cellulose acetate, the coating is a thermoplastic synthetic resin e.g. vinyl acetate or a vinyl-acetate-vinylchloride copolymer, and the plasticizer may be triacetin or dimethyl glycol phthalate. Bonding may be effected by heat or by allowing the wrapped filaments to remain for up to 24 hours at room temperature. The paper tube may have a lapped joint which, upon pressure by a heater bar thereon, seals due to the thermoplastic coating, which may be locally thickened. Quantitative process examples are given. Reference is made to the use, said to be known, of a strip or strips of liquid adhesive on a wrapper to stick it to cellulose acetate filters of kinds described in Specifications 744,449 and 765,963.
