Abstract

1369437 Tobacco-smoke filters MOLINS Ltd 8 Nov 1971 [9 Nov 1970] 53274/70 Heading A2C A cross-flow filter element for a cigarette or similar article comprises a rod 2 formed with substantially axial grooves 4 separated by rib portions 6 which contact one another at the ends 6A of the rod 2 so as to close alternate grooves 4 at opposite ends of the rod 2. The rod 2 may be made by first folding inwards circumferentially spaced regions of a continuous tube by means of die wheels and then pinching together alternate grooves by means of co-operating wheels having holes which enter the grooves at regular intervals. The continuous tube may be formed by extruding filter material into a tubular section, but is preferably formed by bringing together the edges of a continuous web of filter material, especially a web which has been formed with longitudinal grooves along which it is to be subsequently folded. The formed rod 2 is preferably enclosed in a tubular wrapping before being cut at regular intervals to form individual filters, but it may be cut without wrapping and the elements so formed inserted into plastics mouthpieces. Suitable filter materials include continuous crimped cellulose acetate fibres with a bonding agent in the form of a thermoplastic resin or a volatile solvent, which agent can be activated or set by heat to hold the filter material in its final shape. Alternatively, a web comprising one or more layers of filter paper or a web which includes one or more layers of granular, powdery or other particulate material (such as collagen or collagen-filled sheet material) sandwiched between layers of paper or other sheet material, or a web comprising a mixture of cellulose fibres and collagen, may be used.
