Abstract
847,993. Flame desurfacing. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1959 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 3735/59. Class 83 (4). A flame desurfacing apparatus for curvedsection workpieces, particularly circular bars R, comprises an annular scarfing head H carried by a floating panel F mounted in a frame C, L, K for movement in two mutually perpendicular directions, the panel having a separate guide assembly 20, 55, Fig. 4, on each side of the head for maintaining the head coaxial with the workpiece. The panel F is slidable horizontally on axles which carry rollers 10 running in vertical guides 12 and is supported by a float cylinder 15 acting through linkage 14. On the input side of the head a pair of arms 20, 22 pivoted on the frame are movable by air cylinders 24 into a closed position whereby radially-adjustable tapered skids 36 carried on the arms provide guide surfaces for the workpiece. On the output side of the head pivoted guide skids 55 are actuated by air diaphragm chambers 56. The floating panel is initially centred by cylinders 18 controlled by a limit switch engaged by the workpiece, which cylinders are de-energized when the workpiece passes into the skids 36 which finally centre the panel. The latter is then locked in position by cylinder 27. After passing through scarfing head H, the workpiece engages the skids 55, Fig. 4, and the panel F is then unlocked. The head H has pre-heat orifices 46, 47, a main oxygen slot 43 fed by an orifice ring 50, and an adjuvant powder nozzle 49. Jets of water for removing slag are directed tangentially on the workpiece R by nozzles 65, 70, Fig. 5 (not shown), arranged in pairs.
