Abstract
770,859. Spraying fusible materials. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. June 28, 1955 [June 29, 1954], No. 18602/55. Class 69 (3). A gun for spraying refractory metal oxides fed through the gun in rod form comprises a casing 11 housing feed wheels 40, 41 having rubber tyred peripheries 42, 43, whereby the rod is fed to a nozzle structure 61, 62 where it is fused by a gas flame and sprayed by compressed air. A gas receiverdistributer 16 is supplied with compressed air through a line 20 and with acetylene and oxygen through lines 21, 22 respectively. The combustion gases flow through passages 31, 101 and 68 to nozzle gas passages 64. Compressed air flows through passages 56 to the annular space 98 between hollow cylindrical structures 96 and 97, and passes through the converging passage 90 between the gas and air nozzles 61, 62. A part of this air flows through a passage 117 in the nozzle 62 and is deflected by a plate 114 into the main air and gas streams. A block 60 at the rear of the nozzle structure includes a rod gripping and centering mechanism comprising three circumferentially spaced balls 74 housed in radial channels, and urged against the rod by a spring 82 acting on plungers 78. The wheels 40, 41, which feed a succession of abutting rods R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP> through the gun are driven by a shunt wound motor mounted on the gun. The motor armature is supplied with a voltage dependent on the rod speed desired, and means are provided for maintaining the desired speed constant. The upper feed wheel is mounted on a hinged part 48 of the casing and is adjustably urged towards the lower wheel by a screw 51. A valve 23 controls the supply of air and combustion gases.
