847,897. Method of making multi-layer wire ropes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 24, 1957], No. 41152/58. Class 109. Multi-layer wire ropes are made by a method in which each layer is added in a separate stage and the product of one stage acts as core for the next, the twisting being performed by a rotor acting as take-up for one stage and let-off for the next. Each rotor 10 is driven by gearing 13 at a speed synchronized to that of the adjacent rotor, and includes a permanent reel 14 reciprocated by means 17 to lay the product correctly, the reel being rotated by gearing 18 at a speed, adjustable to control the lay of the layer and controlled by means 23. Two rotors may be used alternately or several rotors may be employed.
