Abstract

Olefin polymers containing residual metal catalyst residues are purified by contacting the olefin polymer at an elevated temperature, e.g. 40-150 DEG C, and in the absence of water, with an alcohol containing at least 2 carbon atoms, and then extracting the treated polymer with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide which has a pH of at least 10 and contains a compound which can form a complex with the metal or metals and which complex is soluble in the alkaline solution and subsequently recovering the polymer. The olefin polymer may be treated with dry air or oxygen before or during the treatment with the alcohol. The preferred alcohol is ethanol. The compound which can form a complex may be an alkali metal tartrate, 2-ethyl-hexanediol-1,3, oxalic acid, gluconic acid, glucose, mannitol, glycollic acid, or ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. The olefin polymer may be polyethylene, polypropylene, or poly-butylene. The purified polymer may be used for making shaped articles. Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031 are referred to.
