Abstract

The invention comprises 1, 3-dichloro-tetrahydroquinazoline-2, 4- diones (N, N1-dichlorobenzoylene-ureas) of formula: <FORM:0847566/IV(b)/1> where X5, X6, X7 and X8 are each hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, iodine, methyl or ethyl; and detergent compositions comprising such a compound together with a synthetic detergent. The compounds may be prepared by introducing about 4 moles of gaseous chlorine into an aqueous suspension of about one mole of benzoylene-urea or a suitably substituted derivative thereof and about 2,5 moles of sodium carbonate at a temperature of about 0 DEG C., filtering, washing the precipitate with ice water, and drying. The compounds may be purified by dissolving in chloroform, filtering, and re-precipitating with petroleum ether. The compounds of the invention have bleaching activity (see Group IV(c)).ALSO:Bleaching compositions comprise a synthetic detergent and a compound of formula: <FORM:0847566/IV (c)/1> where X5, X6, X7, X8 are each hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, iodine, methyl or ethyl. Specified compositions are (i) 4,45% of 1, 3-dicloro-tetrahydroquinazoline -2, 4- dione, and the remainder a heavy-duty detergent composition containing about 50% sodium tripolyphosphate, 15% sodium sulphate, 17,5% synthetic detergent (about 50% sulphated fatty alcohol sodium salt derived from the reduction of tallow and 50% sodium polypropylene (C12) benzene sulphonate), 8% moisture, 6% sodium silicate, and the remainder small amounts of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, perfume, fluorescent brightening agents, lauryl alcohol, and coconut oil fatty acid ethanolamide; and (ii) a washing solution containing the same bleaching agent (in concentrations giving 100 and 200 p.p.m. available chlorine), about 0,3% sodium orthophosphate and about 0,06% sodium polypropylene (C12) benzene sulphonate. Cotton may be treated with the bleaching compositions.ALSO:Detergent compositions comprise a synthetic detergent and a compound having the formula: <FORM:0847566/III/1> where X5, X6, X7, X8 are each hydrogen chlorine, bromine, iodine, methyl or ethyl. The compositions have bleaching activity. Specified compositions are (i) 4.45% of 1,3-dichlorotetrahydroquinazoline-2,4-dione, and the remainder a heavy duty detergent composition containing about 50% sodium tripolyphosphate, 15% sodium sulphate, 17.5% synthetic detergent (about 50% sulphate fatty alcohol sodium salt derived from the reduction of tallow and 50% sodium polypropylene (C12) benzene sulphonate), 8% moisture, 6% sodium silicate, and the remainder small amounts of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, perfume, fluorescent brightening agents, lauryl alcohol and coconut oil fatty acid ethanolamide; and (ii) washing solutions containing the same bleaching agent (in concentrations giving 100 and 200 p.p.m. available chlorine), about 0.3% sodium orthophosphate and about 0.06% sodium polypropylene (C12) benezene sulphonate.
