847,496. Treating and mixing fibres. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 7, 1956 [NOV. 7, 1955], No. 34012/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 120(3). [Also in Groups VIII and XXIII]. A self-supporting mat, which .can be impregnated with hardenable resin to form a sheet for backing or reinforcing abrasive sheets, wheels &c. or for dielectric panelling, suitcase panelling or table-tops, comprises a randomly-orientated uniform mixture of 20-80% of polymer-encased short bundles of aligned glass fibres and correspondingly 80-20% of short impregnationresistant cotton thread segments. To form the mats, glass filaments, encased in butadiene acrylonitrile polymer cut into bundles of 0À75 to 2À5 inches long, and tightly-twisted cotton threads of similar length and sized with starch or other material, are uniformly distributed on a moving belt and fed to a knurled squeezing- roller: the material so formed is fed to a venturi for the blended materials to be carried by an airstream to a condensing roll through which air is withdrawn leaving the materials as a self-supporting mat. The impregnating resin (polyesters, butadiene copolymer, epoxy-phenolic, triallyl cyanurate, styrene, maleic anhydride, acrylics, vinyls and polyamides are mentioned) is hardened under pressure; when two or more layers so formed are used they are united under pressure so as to lose their individual identities. To form abrasive materials, one or more mats are superposed on individual or continuous carrier sheets, impregnated and heated under pressure: the carriers are removed and the material, if necessary, cut into discs: one or more surfaces are now roughened, coated with binder and abrasive grains, sized, and cured. For moulded wheels, alternate layers of discs cut from a mat of light weight and impregnating resin with abrasive are cured in moulds.
