Abstract

1,146,036. Forming sheet material; fibre reinforced laminates. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 2 May, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 19181/66. Headings B5A and B5W. Articles are made from a web of fibrereinforced thermoplastic material, in combination with one or more like webs or in combination with one or more solely thermoplastic or solely fibrous webs, by heating the webs to render the thermoplastic component mouldable and then shaping the webs upon a mould maintained at a temperature below the softening point of the thermoplastic component. Thermoplastic materials suitable for use are polystyrene, copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile, P.V.C. vinylchloride copolymers, high and low pressure polyethylene, polypropylene polymethylmethacrylate, methacrylate copolymers and acrylate copolymers, polyamides or polycarbonates. Fibrous substances suitable for use include non-woven, woven or tufted fabrics, flocks, slivers, or felts of e.g. glass wool, rock wool, asbestos fibres wool, cotton or synthetic fibres. In Example 1, two layers of open jute fabric coated on one side with polythene and a layer of unbleached cotton coated on one side with a P.V.C. compound are used. Each layer is placed with its coated side upwards, the unbleached cotton forming the uppermost layer. In Example 2, a film of vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymer supported by a pair of glass cloth fabrics backed by layers of the copolymer are used. In Example 3, ten sheets of weftless warp filaments of glass incorporated in a sheet of styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer interleaved with eleven glass cloth webs coated with the same copolymer are used. In Example 4, a laminate of a non-woven glass fabric bonded by a styrene acrylonitrile copolymer and a layer of such fabric coated with polymethylmethacrylate is used. In Example 6, printed cotton cloth coated with polymethyl methacrylate and an unbleached cotton cloth coated 'with polystyrene is used. In Example 7, four glass fibre fleeces each covered with a powdered layer of styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer are used.
