Abstract

847,410. Lifting devices for manipulating loads. BRESLAV, J. Dec. 19, 1957 [Dec. 21, 1956], No. 39464/57. Class 78 (4). The lifting mechanism B, Fig. 2, of a grab is automatically rotated about a horizontal axis to keep a suspended article, e.g. a coil 13, in a predetermined attitude. As shown the jaws 33, 34 are movable on an arm 28 by oppositelythreaded lead screws 53, 54 driven by a motor 61, the arm 28 being rigidly attached to a rack 25 supported on rollers 17 mounted on a suspension member A movable by a motor 19 driving a pinion 22. For average loads the axis of rotation. is at the centre of gravity of the load plus rotating mechanism. The arm 28 may be maintained either horizontal or vertical by mercury switches 66, 65, Fig. 9, either of which may be connected to control motor 19 by throwing a switch 73, Fig. 10. The curved gripping heads 44, 44a are mounted for limited movement on ramps 49 so that a wedging action is obtained when a load is supported.
