Abstract

Xanthates of the formula RO.CSS(CH2)n COOH, where R is an alkyl radical having 4-20 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 1-3, are prepared by treating an alcohol ROH with CS2 and a metal hydroxide, preferably a hydroxide of a Group I or II metal, in a slight excess of the alcohol at 40-60 DEG C. the xanthate product is filtered and washed and condensed with a salt of a suitable halogenated organic acid, the salt being treated with a strong acid to obtain the free acid of the above formula. The products are used as additives to lubricating oils (see Group III).ALSO:Lubricating oil compositions comprise a lubricating oil and from 0.1 to 10% by weight of an additive of formula RO.CSS(CH2)nCOOH where R is an alkyl radical having 4-20 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 1-3. The base oil may be any mineral or synthetic oil which may also contain other additives, such as agents for lowering the pour point, viscosity index improvers, anti-oxidants and colouring material. The examples use a paraffin oil as base oil, and in some instances the additive of the above formula is used in conjunction with 2,6-di-tert, butyl-4-methyl phenol.
