Abstract

A stabilized lubricating oil additive comprises at least one liquid chlorinated paraffinic hydrocarbon containing 8-26 carbon atoms per molecule and at least 25% by weight chlorine, 0.1-5% of a barium, calcium or magnesium alkyl phenate as defined below, and 0.1-5% of an oil-soluble sequestering agent for heavy metals, the percentages of said phenate and said sequestering agent being calculated on the weight of chlorinated hydrocarbon. The phenates employed are of the formula <FORM:1019924/C4-C5/1> where M is Ba, Ca or Mg, R1 is H or C1- 10 alkyl and R2 is C1- 10 alkyl, or additionally contain proportion of sulphur and one of the formulaeae <FORM:1019924/C4-C5/2> or <FORM:1019924/C4-C5/3> M, R1 and R2 being as defined above. The phenates may be over-based so that they contain a proportion of free hydroxyl groups. Specified sequestering agents are alkyl and aryl phosphites and the pentaerythritol esters of long-chain fatty acids. The stabilized additives may additionally contain conventional heat stabilizers such as epoxidized oils. The example describes a mineral cutting oil containing a stabilized lubricating oil additive of the above type.ALSO:A stabilized lubricating oil additive comprises at least one liquid chlorinated paraffinic hydrocarbon containing 8-26 carbon atoms per molecule and at least 25% by weight chlorine, 0.1-5% of a barium, calcium or magnesium alkyl phenate as defined below, and 0.1-5% of an oil-soluble sequestering agent for heavy metals, the percentages of said phenate and said sequestering agent being calculated on the weight of chlorinated hydrocarbon. The phenates employed one of the formula <FORM:1019924/C2/1> where M is Ba, Ca or Mg, R1 is H or C1- 10 alkyl and R2 is C1- 10 alkyl, or additionally contain proportion of sulphur and are of the formulae <FORM:1019924/C2/2> M, R1 and R2 being as defined above. The phenates may be over-based so that they contain proportion of free hydroxyl groups. Specified sequestering agents are alkyl and aryl phosphites and the pentaerythritol esters of long chain fatty acids. The stabilized additives may additionally contain conventional heat stabilizers such as epoxidized oils.
