Abstract

An aqueous composition for treating cellulosic textiles comprises a polyol, a polyester having structural units linked by ester groups and having free acid groups, and a non-resin forming compound which will, upon subsequent heating cross link with the polyol and the cellulose. The latter compound may be formaldehyde, glyoxal, acetals or hemiacetals, dimethylol ethylene urea or tetramethylol acetylene diurea. The polyol may be polyvinyl alcohol and the polyester may be formed from glycols or glycerol and sebacic, maleic, phthalic or succinic acid. A polyester from succinic acid and triethylene glycol is specified. The composition may have a pH of less than 2,4. The polyester functions as an acid catalyst and as a plasticizer for the polyol.ALSO:Cellulosic fabrics are treated with an aqueous composition containing a film forming polyol, a cross linking agent, and a water-soluble polyester which comprises structural units connected by ester linkages and which contains free acidic groups. The cross linking agent is a compound which will react with the polyol and with the cellulose and will not homopolymerise. Compounds specified are formaldehyde, dimethylol ethylene urea, glyoxal, acetals formed by reaction of a dialdehyde with a monohydric alcohol or of a monoaldehyde and a polyol and hemiacetals, and tetramethylol acetylene diurea. The polyol may be polyvinyl alcohol and the polyester may be obtained from glycols or glycerol and succinic, sebacic, maleic, or phthalic acids. The solution may have a pH not greater than 2,4. The fabrics may be woven, knitted or felted, and after impregnation are squeezed, dried and heated at about 120 DEG C. In examples, (1) a spun rayon fabric is treated with a solution containing polyvinyl alcohol, dimethylol ethylene urea, tetra methylol acetylene diurea and a triethylene glycol-succinic acid polyester, and is squeezed, dried and heated at 130 DEG C.; (2) a cotton poplin fabric is treated with a solution containing polyvinyl alcohol, triethylene glycosuccinic acid polyester, tetramethylol acetylene diurea and formaldehyde and is squeezed, dried and heated at 130 DEG C. The materials treated may have a crease-resistant or stiff finish, reduced water absorption, reduced shrinkability and improved abrasion resistance.
