Apparatus for driving a conveyer chain 10 which comprises alternate double forged links 11 and single forged links 12 comprises two endless driving-chains 14, 25, the former carrying driving-dogs 19 for engagement with the double link 11 of the conveyer chain while the latter carries dogs 27 which engage and drive the dogs 19. Each of the chains 14, 25 is a flatlink chain having a pair of rollers 17, 28, respectively, carried by each of its pivot pins. The chain 14 comprises alternate double links 16 and single links 15, the lower portions of the dog 19 being adapted to straddle the latter links and being connected to the latter for limited relative longitudinal movement by a pin-and-slot connection 21, 22. Each of the dogs 19 comprises a tooth element 23, the forward face of which is adapted to engage the double conveyer chain link 11 while the rear face is stepped to accommodate the dogs 27 on the chain 25. The paths of the chain 14, 25 are so defined by respective guide rails 18, 29 that a dog 27 commences to engage a tooth 23 after the tooth 23 has engaged a link 11 of the conveyer chain, and moves out of engagement with the tooth 23 before the tooth 23 is disengaged from the conveyer chain. The pitch of the dogs 27 on the chain 25 is slightly greater than that of the teeth 23 on the chain 14 so that only one dog 27 is in engagement with a tooth 23 at any given time.
