Abstract
Mixtures of aluminium and magnesium or mixtures of aluminium magnesium alloys and aluminium or magnesium are reacted with alkyl halides in the presence of a di-alkyl or an alkyl aryl ether. Preferably the total amounts of aluminium and magnesium in the mixture of metals or in the metal-alloy mixture are in the stoichiometric proportions 2Al: 3Mg. The metals may be in the form of granules or shavings. When using alkyl halides an alkyl magnesium halide is also produced. The examples describe the preparation of aluminium tributyl diethyl etherate (and butyl magnesium bromide), aluminium triethyl isobutyl etherate (and ethyl magnesium bromide), aluminium triethyl anisole etherate and aluminium triethyl phenetole etherate.
