Abstract
845,231. Sealing by electric heating. RADIO HEATERS Ltd. Dec. 16, 1958 [Sept. 16, 1957], No. 29107/57. Class 39(3). [Also in Groups VIII and XXXVI] In sealing a sleeve around a cable 14, a strip 13 made of or coated with thermoplastic material is placed over the cable, Fig. 1, and the cable pushed between the jaws 3 of a pair of tongs to engage a pressure pad 12. The jaws are then closed to compress the pad around the strip and cable and to close electrodes 8, 9 on the free ends of the strip, Fig. 2. The electrode 9 is earthed and the electrode 8 is connected through a conductor 10 to a R.F. generator. Power is disconnected after the weld is completed but the jaws of the tongs are kept closed for a period sufficient to allow cooling of the joint. The electrodes may be engraved to enable identification data to be embossed along the seam.
