Abstract

839,700. Cables cable joints. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. May 23, 1958 [May 24, 1957], No. 16607/57. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A laminated wall of dielectric is built up around a cable conductor or jointed conductor by passing the conductor through alternate tape lapping heads (or groups of tape lapping heads) and heating stations, the lapping heads each applying one or more helically lapped tapes of high-energy irradiated polyethylene to the conductor and the heating stations each heating the partly built wall of dielectric to a temperature sufficient to shrink the applied tapes and cause residual cavities between the tapes to be filled with liquid polyethylene pressed out from the tapes. The arrangement is particularly applicable to the method of making a high voltage cable or cable joint described in Specification 839,485.
