Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions which, on addition of water give solutions or uniform oral suspensions are prepared by coating coarse crystals of sugar having an average diameter of about 300 to 1200 microns such as of sucrose, lactose or dextrose with a water-soluble gum so that the surface of the crystals becomes sticky and applying to the sticky surfaces finely divided therapeutic agent. The sugar crystals may be mixed with a surface active agent and may be coated with finely divided sugar, before the gum coating. Successive coatings of gum and therapeutic agent may be applied with intermediate drying. Therapeutic agents include antibiotics, vitamins, minerals, antispasmodics, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, central nervous system stimulants, hormones; gums include pectin, acacia, agar, tragacanth, sodium alginate, methyl, carboxymethyl and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and polyvinyl-pyrrolidone; solvents include butanol, isopropanol, carbon tetrachloride and ethylene dichloride.
