Abstract

844,594. Stuffing-box substitutes. CHEMSTRAND CORPORATION. April 13, 1959 [April 14, 1958], No. 12466/59. Class 122 (5). A sealing device 11 for sealing an opening 23 in a wall 16 separating high and low pressure regions 13, 14 between which material 12 continuously passes comprises a sealing member 17 supported by means 24, 33, 36, 37 in the highpressure region and having a passage 22 communicating with the opening 23 ; as the material passes through the passage, the latter yieldingly opens against the pressure in the latter region and effects sealing relationship with the material. As shown applied to sealing the opening 23 in the wall 16 of an annealing chamber 14 containing pressurized steam through which the material, such as tow, is fed, the sealing member 17, which is formed of a resilient material such as neoprene, is provided with end flanges 19, 21 and a passage 22 in the form of a slit passing internally through a web 18 connecting the flanges, the end of the slit being arranged to be normally closed. The sealing member is mounted on the wall 16 by a plate 24, Fig. 3, having an opening 26 surrounding the web and arranged to clamp the flange 19 against the wall by bolts 30. The plate 24 is provided with spacers 33, 34 welded to bars 36, 37 against which the flange 21 is clamped by bars 38, 39. In operation, the material is sandwiched between roller-driven thin metal belts 44, 46 and fed thereby through the opening 23 and passage 22 into the chamber 14, the pressure of the steam therein acting on the resilient web 18 and pressing it into sealing contact with the belts; identical sealing devices 17 are arranged at the points where the belts pass outwardly through the wall 16 on their return movement. The material 12 may be pulled through the sealing member alone or by any other conveying means.
