Abstract
A process for the production of solid polymers of unsaturated hydrocarbons in which the polymerization is effected in a hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon liquid medium in the presence of a catalyst consisting of or containing, a halogen compound of a metal comprises adding to the solid polymer, while it is still wet with the liquid medium, a solution of a basic compound of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc or cadmium in a liquid which is either the same as the liquid medium or is miscible therewith and then removing the liquids from the solid polymer. Specified polymers are of ethylene and propylene, while specified liquids are pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, petroleum naptha, gas oil, benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, decahydro naphthalene chlorobenzene and -dichlorobezene. Specified basic compounds are oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of alkaline earth metals or magnesium, e.g. calcium carbonate which may be stabilised e.g. by means of calcium alkyl salicylates or calcium naphthenate. The solutions may be prepared by the processes of Specifications 687,490, 729,376, 742,765, 759,344, 780,058, 780,642, 785,196, 786,167, 789,562, 790,471, 790,473, 795,172, 795,657, and 828,491.
