Abstract

1,225,039. Fuel. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 March, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 16485/68. Heading C5G. [Also in Division C3] Fuel oil compositions comprise anti-smoke additives prepared by introducing carbon dioxide and (A) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide into a mixture of (B) a phenol, thiophenol, or metal or ammonium phenate or thiophenate and (C) a dispersant for the metal carbonate produced, a long-chain compound (D) which is an organic acid containing at least 6 carbon atoms or salt thereof, an alcohol containing at least 6 carbon atoms or alcoholate thereof or an ester containing at least 8 carbon atoms being introduced before, during or after reaction. The fuel may be a light fuel oil, diesel gas oil, furnace heavy oil, kerosene diesel oil or residual fuel. Preferred reactants are (A) barium oxide or hydroxide, (B) alkyl phenols, polyhydric phenols and alkylene bisphenols and (C) acidic sulphur-containing hydrocarbon derivatives such as reaction products of sulphur and sulphur-containing materials with terpenes, paraffins, olefins, petroleum fractions and paraffin waxes, particularly phosphosulphurized polyolefins and polyolefin sulphonic acids. (D) may be a C 12-40 mono- or poly-basic acid, mono- or poly-hydric alcohol or ester. Many suitable reactants are listed and examples describe diesel fuel compositions comprising additives obtained by reacting carbon dioxide, barium hydroxide and C 8-10 alkyl phenols with (I) polyisobutylene sulphonic acid and oleyl alcohol; and with phosphosulphurized polyisobutylene in the presence of (II) oleyl alcohol, (III-V) oleic and monoethanolamine, and (VI) monoethanolamine oleate, and with the subsequent addition of (VII) neotridecanoic acid, naphthanoic acid, sorbitan mono-oleate, tall oil, tall oil acids, neodecanoic acid, lauric acid, C 20-22 fatty acids, oleylamine, oleic acid, triethanolamine oleate, monoethanolamine oleate, isopropanolamine oleate and butylamine oleate.
