In a pressure exchanger the cells are closed to scavenge flow ducts in stages. The low pressure discharge duct Lo is followed in the direction of cell rotation by a duct Vo in which a higher pressure than in the duct Lo is maintained. The high pressure delivery duct Hi is progressively closed to the cells by shaping of the nozzle edge N.
