Abstract

Threads are produced by spinning viscose in a bath containing 2-7% by weight of sulphuric acid, 5-20% by weight of sodium sulphate and 2-15% by weight of zinc sulphate at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C. but below 40 DEG C., the viscose and/or the spinning bath containing a polyalkylene glycol or derivative thereof, a monoamine or polyamine, a quaternary ammonium compound, a thiocarbamate, an imidazole or a thiazole and the threads produced being stretched either in the spinning bath itself or in a subsequent, more dilute, bath which is at the same temperature as, or a higher temperature than, the first bath. The additives may be added to the viscose in a proportion of 0,02-0,6% by weight and to the spinning bath in a proportion of 0,1-5 g. per Kg. of spinning bath. Preferred polyalkylene glycol derivatives are those of the general formula RO-(CH2CH2O)nR1 where R is an alkyl or aryl radical, R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl radical and n is 1-4. Aliphatic or aromatic monoamines or polyamines, quaternary ammonium bases or hetero cyclic bases, monothiocarbamates and dithiocarbamates, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, mercapto thiazole and reaction products of polyalkylene glycols with fatty amines, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, aromatic acids, aromatic alcohols or aromatic amines are suitable additives. A small proportion of formaldehyde may also be added to the spinning bath. Examples describe the spinning of viscose in the presence of (a) ethoxylated coconut oil amines of the general formula <FORM:0843204/IV(a)/1> having an average molecular weight of approximately 1100 and in which x+y=approximately 20, (b) an ethoxylated ammonia of the formula p <FORM:0843204/IV(a)/2> in which x+y+z=20, (c) a compound of the formula <FORM:0843204/IV(a)/3> in which x+y+z=20, (d) a reaction product of castor oil and a polyglycol having the formula CH3,(CH2)5-CHOH-CH2-CH =CH(CH2)7-CO ,O(CH2CH2O)15H and (e) polyethylene glycol having a molecular weight of 4,000.
