Abstract
840,053. Variable pitch propellers. BAMFORD & CO. Ltd., F. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 8, 1957], No. 31397/57. Class 114. A variable pitch marine propeller drive comprising a pitch-controlling gear box a, Figs. 1 and 2, a thrust block e, Figs 1 and 3, and a propeller d driven by a shaft g, Figs. 2 and 3, in a stern tube c, Fig. 1, has the propeller blades r journalled on conical trunnions s in the propeller boss q with thrust collars v and splined driving connection a with the shaft g, a cam block t mounted on the end of said shaft, and pins on the trunnions engaging the cam block whereby sliding movement of the shaft in the boss causes turning of the blades for change of pitch. The sliding shaft g has a splined coupling h to the engine driven shaft, a screw mounted thereon and prevented from turning by splines m on the gear box casing, and a nut n on the screw and adapted to be rotated by bevel gears o from a controlling shaft p, rotation of which will therefore cause axial movement of the shaft g resulting in turning of the blades e.g. from full ahead position to full astern.
