Abstract
Butyl rubber is halogenated by reacting, in an organic solvent, with an organic N-halogeno compound used in the presence of a nonmetallic peroxide as catalyst, specified compounds being hydrogen-, dicumyl-, benzoyl-, ditertiary butyl- and acetyl-peroxides; tetrahydronaphthalene-, tertiary butyl- and cumenehydroperoxides; ascaridole and peracetic acid. N-halogeno compounds disclosed are N-bromo succinimide, N - chloro - and N - bromo - acetamides, N-chloro- and N-bromo-phthal-imides, and N,N1-dichloro- and N,N1-dibrom-5,5-dimethyl hydantoins. The products may be vulcanized with zinc oxide and/or sulphur, if desired in the presence of carbon black and stearic acid, and may be covulcanized with natural rubber or diene/styrene, diene/nitrile or chloroprene rubber.
