Abstract

838,501. Veterinary appliances. HANSEN, E. J., and LOWRY, R. H. W. Nov. 6, 1956 [Dec. 6, 1955], No. 33873/56. Class 81 (2). An instrument for trimming the hooves and dressing the teeth of animals comprises an elongated cylindrical cutting-tool 9 carried by a rotary driven spindle 8, and stop means extending over a substantial portion of the length of the tool for limiting its penetration in a radial direction. The cylindrical cutting-tool 9 has helicallyarranged cutting teeth 9b and is secured by setscrews 10 to the spindle 8 which is rotatable in a housing 1 forming a handpiece. The housing is mounted on one end of a spigot 6, a toothed bevel-wheel 11 located in a recess at the other end of the spigot being threaded on the spindle. The spigot is pivotally connected to a second spigot 17 which is screwed in a sleeve 25. A driving spindle 22 is rotatably mounted in the second spigot and projects into the sleeve which encloses a flexible spindle driving-shaft (not shown). A second toothed bevel-wheel 23 is threaded to the second spindle and is arranged in a recess 18b in the second spigot so that it meshes with the first toothed bevel-wheel 11. A tubular cutter head 3 is screwed on the forward end of the housing and is longitudinally chamfered, the arrangement being such that a part of the cutting-tool projects through a slot 5 formed in the side of the cutter head between coplanar faces 4. The cutting-tool projects forwardly beyond the cutter head. This projecting portion may have cutting-teeth. A leather guard for the bevel-wheels 11, 23 may be secured to the first spigot 6. Lubrication holes 12, 24 are provided.
