Abstract

Aqueous cooling compositions contain one or more glycols or glycerol, an alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid containing an aromatic or cyclic aliphatic group, an alkali metal nitrite and an alkali metal borate or phosphate. The glycol or glycerol may be present in an amount of 20% by volume of the total volume of the composition, and the composition may contain 1 to 5% of the carboxylic acid salt, 0.5% of the nitrite and 0.5% of the borate or phosphate, all by weight of the glycol or glycerol. A mixture of the carboxylic acid salt, nitrite and borate or phosphate, may be added to a solution of the glycol or glycerol in water. In examples, compositions contain ethylene glycol, sodium benzoate, sodium 1-naphthoate, sodium 2-naphthoate, sodium 4-methyl benzoate, sodium anisate sodium hexahydrobenzoate, sodium trans 4-methyl cyclohexane carboxylate, sodium phenyl acetate, sodium cinnamate, sodium cyclohexyl acetate, sodium 2-cyclohexyl propionate, sodium 4-nonyl phenoxy acetate, sodium 4-methyl phenoxy acetate, sodium 1-naphthoxy acetate, sodium cyclohexyl glycollate, sodium decahydro - 2 - naphthoxy acetate, di - sodium phthalate, and sodium nitrite and sodium borate.
