Abstract
837,591. Aircraft wings and other aerodynamic members. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. June 20, 1957 [March 24, 1956], No. 9265/56. Class 4. An inflatable aircraft wing or other main aerodynamic member has internal inflatable tubes extending spanwise substantially from wing tip to wing tip adjacent the upper and lower wing skins, the tubes diverging from the tips towards the centre of the wing and being spaced apart at the centre to provide sufficient space between them to accommodate persons or apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan of an all-wing aircraft with a vertical axial section as in Fig. 5. The forward tube 18a, the upper tubes 18b, c, d, e and #, and the lower tubes 19b, c, d, and e are contiguous at the wing tips 14a, 15a and diverge to the centre section 17 where they are parallel. The gratial relationship is maintained by inflatable bags e.g. bags 20, 21 or 22, located between the upper and lower tubes, and crew members and ground wheels 33 are accommodated in spaces between the wing tubes at the centre. The tubes may taper over all or part of their length, and may comprise cylindrical and tapered portions secured together. Elevons 24, 25 hinged to the wing also comprise spanwise extending tubes. An engine 26 and pusher propeller 27 are mounted on fore-and-aft extending inflatable tubes 32. The outboard portions of the wing may be raised relatively to the centre. Specification 835,221 is referred to.
