Abstract
Hydrogen is added to helium, in balloons airships or inflatable components (such as aircraft struts or spars) to improve lifting capacity without compromising safety. The gas may be heated.
Description
HYDROGEN-HELIUM AIRSHIP
This invention relates to the gas content of a balloon or airship.
Modern airships use helium gas to generate lift, operators were forced to use this gas because hydrogen was deemed to be too dangerous. Helium is an expensive gas to produce and because it weighs more than hydrogen, it produces less lift.
However, a helium airship can increase its lifting capability by mixing some hydrogen gas into the gas envelope. The two gases inside the envelope will mix due to convection currents, to such an extent that it will be difficult for the hydrogen to ignite. If combustion of the hydrogen did occur, then the surrounding helium will extinguish the flames. Hence, the performance of the helium airship can be increased without compromising safety by injecting some hydrogen into the gas.
This gas mixture is suitable for balloons, airships and aerostat balloons. Heating the gas can increase the performance further.
This gas mixture can also be used to inflate other structures.
An example would be an inflatable spar or strut for an aircraft; this would reduce the weight of those structural components.
