Abstract

837,557. Cable joints. STEWART, R. B. Oct. 4, 1957 [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24132/56. Class 38 (1). A water-tight junction box for electric cables comprises an outer cylinder 1 enclosing a loose diametrically-split cylinder 7 spacing apart one or more glands, each gland comprising discs 3, 4 and a sealing ring of rubber or like compressible material 5 bearing on the cable sheath and cylinder 7. The rings 5 are compressed by means of spigoted end caps 11, having a tapered opening 12 which are drawn together by bolts 14 against the outward thrust of the cylinder 2. Steel wire armoured cables may have the armouring 15 terminated between a pair of adjacent discs, the continuity being preserved by further discs of lead or similar material on one side of the armouring. In another embodiment the sealing arrangements at one end of the cylinder are replaced by a fixed aperture shoulder engaging with the cylinder 2, lugs being provided at the opposite end to receive the tensioning bolts. The tensioning bolts may also be replaced by an apertured gland nut, which engages in a screw thread at the outer end of the cylinder.
